The City of New Orleans is being fined by the Municipal Police Employee Retirement System (MPERS) for $38 million over the next 15 years due to a drastic drop in New Orleans Police Department officers.
State law requires that if a department drops more than 50 participating employees in a year, the department is deemed partially dissolved and therefore penalized.
The New Orleans Office of Inspector General states in a March 2023 communication, MPERS actuary determined the NOPD lost more than 50 police employees between 2020 and 2021, and then again between 2021 and 2022.10
